Amanda Knox, the woman behind one of the most infamous international crime sagas, has seen her story reimagined in a new Hulu mini-series called “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.” The eight-part series debuts on Wednesday and stars Grace Van Patten as the titular character from her 20s to mid-30s.
Knox served as an executive producer on the show and praised Van Patten’s performance, saying she accurately captured her personality quirks that were scrutinized by prosecutors and tabloids during her trial for the 2007 murder of British exchange student Meredith Kercher.
The series recreates Knox’s highly publicized trial in a unique style, blending elements of prison drama, courtroom drama, love story, and horror. It also explores her decision to return to Italy in 2022 to confront her nemesis, lead Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini.
Knox said the themes of perception and miscommunication are central to the show, highlighting how cultural and language barriers led to a clash of perspectives that fueled her ordeal.
Van Patten spent time with Knox, her husband Christopher Robinson, and their two children to prepare for the role. She also learned Italian throughout filming but acknowledged the brutal nature of some scenes.
Knox initially expressed hesitation about Van Patten playing her, fearing she would pass on “this baggage” to a younger generation. However, she now believes the show gives everyone an opportunity to understand Knox’s story based on facts rather than preconceived notions.
The series was created by K.J. Steinberg and features Monica Lewinsky, Christopher Robinson, and Warren Littlefield as executive producers. The show aims to provide closure for Knox, who has spent nearly four years in prison, and allow viewers to form their own opinions about her story without the influence of cultural messaging that often portrayed women as victims or perpetrators.
