Amanda Seyfried Tackles Dark Drama in ‘Long Bright River’

Amanda Seyfried is taking on a new challenge with her role as a Philadelphia police officer in the limited series “Long Bright River,” premiering on Peacock on March 13. The show, based on bestselling book by Liz Moore, follows Mickey, a single mother investigating multiple deaths of unhoused women in a city ravaged by opioid addiction.

Seyfried’s character is far removed from her comedic roles, such as her iconic turn as Gretchen Wieners in “Mean Girls.” While comedy requires perfect timing, drama demands emotional depth and nuance. Seyfried says she finds both types of acting challenging but rewarding.

“I think that’s what [showrunner Nikki Toscano] means by Barbara Beefcake Badass,” Seyfried said. The character is an everywoman – awkward, flawed, and relatable. Seyfried brought a sense of grit to the role, portraying a single mother working tirelessly as a cop to provide for her child.

The show boasts an impressive female crew, with all eight episodes directed by women, including Toscano. Nicholas Pinnock, who stars alongside Seyfried, praised this shift in perspective, saying it should be a norm rather than a talking point.

While “Long Bright River” poses unique challenges, Seyfried is committed to her craft. She believes that both comedy and drama require energy and emotion, but ultimately, she finds joy in playing complex characters like Mickey.

The series begins streaming on Peacock on March 13, offering a powerful portrayal of women’s experiences and the complexities of human relationships.
