Amazon has announced the closure of its warehouse and logistics operations in Quebec, resulting in 1,700 job losses. In response, the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux (CSN), representing workers, accused Amazon of engaging in what they termed “disguised dismissals.” Workers expressed frustration over what they described as ongoing attempts to silence their union drive since it began three years ago.
Amazon denied claims from the union that the dismissals were improper and emphasized that the closures are part of a broader reorganization. The company has not abandoned direct operations in large population centers across North America, though this move marks a notable shift.
Quebec’s high rate of unionization (about 40%) contrasts sharply with other provinces like Seattle, where roughly two out of five workers are unionized. This context underscores the unique labor dynamics in Quebec and Amazon’s strategic considerations.
The closures have left many workers displaced, with the government offering assistance to find new jobs. The situation has also drawn attention to broader challenges in Canada’s business landscape as companies continue to adapt to changing economic conditions and regulatory environments.
