Amazon drivers across four US states have gone on strike, but the company claims it won’t affect holiday deliveries. The Teamsters union represents 7,000 workers nationwide, mostly drivers who wear Amazon vests and deliver packages in vans. However, Amazon disputes that they’re employees, claiming many picketers aren’t actually working for them.
The strike, which began on Thursday morning, was authorized by the Teamsters after a failed labor negotiation with Amazon. Drivers are demanding better wages and benefits to cope with rising costs of living. Some drivers say they can’t afford Christmas presents this year due to low pay.
Amazon’s spokesperson, Kelly Nantel, says the union doesn’t represent any actual employees but claims it’s a PR stunt. However, some people on picket lines have confirmed being Teamsters from other industries.
The strike is seen as a last-ditch effort before the holiday rush begins. Amazon has reported massive profits this year, but its drivers say they’re struggling to make ends meet. The union hopes to apply pressure and convince customers to shop elsewhere for gifts.
Amazon claims many picketers aren’t even working for them, saying it’s an attempt to intimidate its own employees. However, the union disputes this claim, saying all the strikers are actually Amazon workers or partners who want better treatment.
The strike’s duration is uncertain, but with the holiday rush approaching, the situation is tense.
