Amazon is ending its operations in Quebec, cutting about 1,700 full-time jobs. The company will shut down seven sites across the province, which includes unionized Amazon workers. Employees affected by the closures will be offered a package including up to 14 weeks of pay and job placement resources.
The decision follows a review of Quebec operations, with an spokesperson stating that switching to a third-party delivery model will help save costs for customers.
Ottawa-based federal innovation minister expressed disappointment with Amazon’s move, calling it anti-union and contradicting labor code provisions. Unions are opposing the closures, citing legal challenges and their role in improving workplace conditions.
Seasonal workers affected by the layoff may also lose their jobs. The company is working to help affected employees transition through the offered benefits package.
