Amazon is set to invest $10 billion in a data center campus in Richmond County, North Carolina, which is expected to create at least 500 jobs and support thousands more through construction and supply chain providers. The investment will position the state as a hub for cutting-edge technology, driving significant economic growth.
The project will employ engineers, network specialists, and other technical roles, with Amazon also providing support for workforce training programs to help people enter data center and broadband expansion fields. Richmond County commissioners approved an incentives package for the company on Tuesday, which includes annual cash grants contingent on job creation and investment thresholds.
This investment marks one of the largest in state history, according to Governor Josh Stein’s office. The project has been hailed as a game-changer for the region, with expected upgrades to water systems, wastewater treatment facilities, and fiber optic infrastructure at no cost to taxpayers. Amazon has already invested $12 billion in North Carolina since 2010, supporting 24,000 jobs.
The data center campus will contain servers, storage drives, networking equipment, and other technology, reflecting the growing importance of artificial intelligence in modern industries. With this investment, Amazon aims to foster innovation and talent development, partnering with educational institutions and local suppliers to nurture the next generation of tech professionals.
