Amazon has tapped French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve to helm the 26th outing of James Bond. The film is currently slated for a 2028 release date. Villeneuve beat out four European directors, including Edward Berger, Edgar Wright, Paul King, and Jonathan Nolan, in the competitive process.
With Villeneuve on board, Amazon will prioritize casting a young British actor under 30 to play Agent 007. Insiders point to Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, and Harris Dickinson as top contenders for the role. Although there were rumors of Aaron Taylor-Johnson or Henry Cavill being considered, they are both over 35.
Villeneuve is committed to directing two Bond films back-to-back, similar to Sam Mendes’ previous record. The director will not have final cut on his projects, and Amazon aims to attach a writer soon. However, it remains unclear who Villeneuve’s writing partner will be among the shortlist of writers being considered by Amazon.
