Amazon Takes Control of James Bond Franchise, Promises ‘Safe’ Approach

Amazon’s acquisition of the James Bond franchise has raised concerns among fans and critics, but CEO Andy Jassy reassured that the company will take a “safe” approach to reviving the iconic series. The deal, announced last Friday, gives Amazon full creative control of the property after a 2022 acquisition of MGM.

Jassy acknowledged that some may worry about over-exploitation, but he dismissed concerns, saying, “We have amazing filmmakers hired over time at MGM Amazon Studios” and expressed his team’s honor in helping shepherd the franchise for its next generation. He also jokingly dismissed the idea of AI writing a Bond movie anytime soon.

The CEO emphasized that Amazon will focus on big theatrical movies featuring the character as a straight white British male, playing it safe with a traditional Bond film formula. However, he hinted at exploring spin-off series and other creative endeavors to avoid overexposure.

Critics have mixed opinions on Amazon’s track record, citing both successes (The Boys, Reacher) and flops (Red One, Here). Jassy acknowledged potential mistakes but noted that the Wilson-Broccoli arrangement had always managed to get back on track due to their dedication. He reassured fans that Amazon will ensure a broad appeal for the films and spin-offs.

Not everyone is convinced, with some expressing skepticism about the franchise’s future under new ownership. However, Jassy remains optimistic, emphasizing the importance of honoring the franchise’s legacy while ensuring its continued relevance.
