Thousands of Amazon workers are threatening to go on strike during the holiday season as they demand better wages, benefits, and safer working conditions. The workers, represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, have voted to authorize a strike if their demands are not met.
The workers, who include drivers at two Amazon warehouses in Atlanta and warehouse staff at an Illinois delivery station, claim that the company’s management prioritizes profits over employee safety. They say that they are forced to work long hours without adequate breaks, even if it means risking injury.
The Teamsters union has been organizing workers at 10 Amazon facilities across the country, including in California and Georgia. The union alleges that Amazon manipulates workplace injury data to make its warehouses appear safer than they actually are.
Amazon has responded to the allegations, saying that Sen. Bernie Sanders’ report is “wrong on the facts” and that it is based on outdated information. However, the company’s actions have sparked widespread concern among workers who claim that their safety is being compromised for the sake of profits.
