AMD’s Radeon RX 6600 has taken the top spot on Steam’s latest hardware survey for October, narrowly edging out its Polaris-based counterpart, the RX 580. This marks the second consecutive month the RX 6600 holds onto the top position, but it still fails to crack AMD’s coveted top 30 list. In contrast, Nvidia dominates the market with 77.37% of dedicated GPU sales, leaving AMD at a distant 15%.
The most popular GPUs on Steam currently are the RTX 3060, followed by the RTX 4060 mobile and desktop variants. Meanwhile, the RX 6600 ranks 34th, despite being almost three years old.
Despite its relative popularity in the Steam community, gamers have shown little enthusiasm for RDNA 3-based GPUs like the RX 7600, AMD’s successor to the RX 6600. Used RX 6600s continue to flood the secondhand market due to a recent GPU mining boom.
The main reason for this lack of interest lies in Nvidia’s strong position in the market. The company’s budget RTX 40 series is far more popular than AMD’s offerings, and Steam users overwhelmingly favor Nvidia GPUs.
However, AMD remains committed to its Radeon RX 8000 lineup, expected to launch by early 2025. To regain market share, AMD will focus on high-volume mid-range GPU production for budget gamers, aiming to capitalize on the coming year’s trends.
As AMD continues to strive for improvement, its pricing strategy will be crucial in attracting customers. With Nvidia dominating the market, AMD must offer competitive prices and performance to make a convincing package. The company should prioritize creating a more efficient, cost-effective solution that appeals to both gamers and budget-conscious buyers.
