AMD Sticks to Price on Threadripper 9000 Series Amid Industry Shifts

AMD has maintained the price of its high-end Threadripper 9000 series chips, which was previously passed down from the previous generation’s Ryzen 7980X. The new Threadripper 9980X will retail at $4,999, a price unchanged since 2023.

This move may seem counterintuitive given the current market trends, but AMD has stated its intentions behind designing these chips for AI model training rather than gaming and high-performance computing. To further emphasize this focus, AMD is emphasizing parts like the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and new Ryzen AI Max and Max+ processors that cater to gaming and AI inferencing.

The Threadripper 9000 series features a TR5 socket with up to 1TB of DDR5 memory support across four channels, as well as 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes. Pricing for the 96-core models starts at $9,999 for the Pro variant and $11,699 for the HEDT (high-end desktop) model.

Consumers looking for high-performance computing might find themselves considering alternative options given AMD’s current pricing strategy and shifting market focus towards AI-focused applications.
