AMD Struggles with GPU Restocking After Record-Breaking Launch

AMD’s Radeon VP, David McAfee, has called the demand for the company’s new RX 9070 XT graphics card “unprecedented” after its launch on March 6th. The cards sold out worldwide at blistering speed, leaving many customers scrambling to find them.

McAfee explained that AMD’s supply chain is more complex than other industries, involving multiple partners and a lengthy process before products hit shelves. Restocking GPUs is currently the company’s top priority.

While McAfee assured that the RX 9070 XT will be available at its original price point of $599 when supply returns, some are skeptical given the trend of GPU prices skyrocketing after launch. Nvidia’s RTX 4090, for example, has never settled below its MSRP despite being released several years ago.

Despite this, McAfee remains optimistic about the current state of AMD’s consumer offerings and the company’s plans to expand its portfolio. The company is focusing on building broad appeal and developing relationships with developers.

For consumers like those who are waiting for their 3060 GPU upgrade, patience may be necessary as AMD continues to build up supply. With the launch of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, AMD has secured top dog status in the CPU market, but it will take time for the company to regain its footing in the GPU market.

With a vast majority of consumers buying GPUs at sub-$700 price points, AMD is focusing on growing scale and deriving developer relationships. While it may take time, the future looks bright for AMD as it continues to compete with Nvidia.
