AMD Unveils Next-Gen AI Chips for Hyperscale Clusters

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled its next-generation AI chips, the Instinct MI400 series, which will ship next year. The new chips are designed to be used in hyperscale clusters of AI computers that can span entire data centers.

AMD CEO Lisa Su announced the launch at a event in San Jose, California, and was joined by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who expressed his enthusiasm for the new technology. Altman stated that the Instinct MI400 series will enable “an amazing thing” for AI development.

The new chips are designed to be assembled into a full server rack called Helios, which can handle thousands of chips in a single system. This allows customers to tap into massive compute power and flexibility, crucial for cloud providers and companies developing large language models.

AMD’s MI400 series will compete directly with Nvidia’s Blackwell chips, which already come in configurations with 72 graphics-processing units stitched together. The new technology also enables AMD to undercut Nvidia on price due to lower power consumption.

Analysts expect the total market for AI chips to exceed $500 billion by 2028, driven by large capital expenditures from big cloud companies and countries. AMD has committed to releasing new AI chips on an annual basis, emphasizing fierce competition in the industry.

The company’s latest chip, the MI355X, started shipping last month and will be available for rent from cloud providers starting in the third quarter. Oracle plans to offer clusters with over 131,000 MI355X chips, while Meta and Microsoft are also using AMD’s CPUs and GPUs for their AI applications.
