AMD has finally entered the highly competitive graphics card market with its new Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT GPUs. The cards will start at $549 and $599 respectively, putting them head-to-head with Nvidia’s $549 GeForce RTX 5070 and $749 RTX 5070 Ti.
According to AMD, both the 9070 and 9070 XT offer “4K gaming at a 1440p price,” although some unusual comparisons have been made. The 9070 XT is reportedly 51% faster than a four-year-old RX 6900 XT at 4K and max settings, and 26% faster than a four-year-old RTX 3090.
AMD’s director of graphics product management, Scott Olschewsky, said that the new cards feature a 4nm monolithic chip that is “the most efficient GPU we’ve ever built.” Each card also comes with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b ports, and PCIe 5.0 connectivity.
The 9070 XT is expected to be around 42% more potent than AMD’s RX 7900 GRE at 4K Ultra, while the vanilla RX 9070 is 21% faster than the same card at 4K. Both cards also support AMD’s FSR 4 AI upscaling technology, which can increase frame rates “while looking just as good as native rendering” at 4K resolution.
AMD claims that its Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) fake frame generation technology will be upgraded to AFMF 2.1, with improved ghosting and smearing of details. The company also plans to release an enhanced media engine with higher image quality for gameplay recording.
Despite Nvidia’s warnings of shortages with its new cards, AMD expects “strong availability at launch.” The company is working closely with its partners to deliver competitive prices on GPUs around the world.
The Radeon RX 9060 series cards are also expected to arrive in the second quarter, further broadening AMD’s family of graphics cards. With the competition heating up, it will be interesting to see how these new cards perform against Nvidia’s offerings.
