American Airlines has ended its decade-long partnership with Barclays and inked a new 10-year agreement with Citi, making the bank its sole issuer of co-branded credit cards in the US starting in 2026.
The move marks a significant shift for American, which previously shared co-branding with multiple issuers. Citi will acquire all Barclays’ American Airlines co-branded card portfolio and transition existing cardmembers to its own products by 2026. Meanwhile, existing Barclays cardmembers will continue to have access to their benefits.
For Citi, the deal is a major coup, allowing it to expand its customer base and introduce new loyalty and reward offerings. The bank currently offers four American Airlines co-branded credit cards, which will be absorbed into its portfolio under this new agreement.
