American Airlines flights were cleared to resume operations by regulators early Tuesday after a brief grounding due to a systemwide technical issue. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered all American Airlines flights grounded in the US at the airline’s request just before 7 am Eastern time.
The airline reported a technical issue affecting its entire system, with millions of travelers expected to fly over the next 10 days. In response to frustrated travelers, American Airlines said on social media that it was working to rectify the issue and thanked them for their patience.
An email from the FAA confirmed the airline’s request for a nationwide ground stop for all American Airlines planes and subsidiary airlines. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects to screen 40 million passengers over the holidays and into January 2.
The grounding occurred as several travel dates, including December 24th, 11th, 9th, 26th, were affected by the technical issue. However, it appears that a “nationwide ground stop” was not implemented for these specific dates, as no press release or further information on the issue’s resolution is available from American Airlines.
