American Airlines Plane Crashes into Helicopter in Potomac River

A midair collision between an American Airlines jet and a military Blackhawk helicopter occurred at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, resulting in a large search-and-rescue operation in the nearby Potomac River. All takeoffs and landings from the airport were suspended as helicopters from agencies across the region searched for survivors.

Eighteen bodies have been pulled from the water, with authorities confirming no survivors so far. Rescue efforts were launched after a fireball was reported at the crash site around 9 p.m. EST. Inflatable rescue boats were used to search the Potomac River near the George Washington Parkway. The Federal Aviation Administration said the collision occurred when the regional jet from Wichita, Kansas, smashed into the helicopter while approaching an airport runway.
