TBS will no longer air new episodes of Seth MacFarlane’s animated series American Dad after the current season. The show’s move from FOX in 2014 marked its debut on basic cable, where it has been a strong performer for the network.
The decision comes as Warner Bros. Discovery continues to reevaluate its cable networks, including TBS, TNT, and truTV. This shift could be seen as the company clarifying its strategy, although it may not win fans given WBD’s track record with animation.
A potential new home for American Dad has been speculated, particularly Hulu, which has already collaborated with MacFarlane on two original Family Guy specials. The show’s storyline involving escaped lab monkeys in 2014 may have foreshadowed the current situation, where a facility worker’s mistake led to the escape of 43 rhesus macaque monkeys.
The incident involved a worker failing to secure the door, causing the monkeys to “follow-the-leader” and escape. While initial reports suggested they were not planning to stray far from the facility, their behavior was described as playful and chaotic. The situation bears some resemblance to classic sci-fi films like Planets of the Apes and 28 Days Later.
The show’s storyline often explores futuristic themes and the consequences of scientific experimentation gone wrong. With the current season nearing its conclusion, fans are left wondering what will happen next for American Dad in its future home.
