Variety has confirmed that 20th Television Animation and Fox Entertainment are nearing a deal to bring back long-running animated sitcom “American Dad!” The show, which launched in 2005, is expected to air new episodes on the broadcast network, marking its return after nearly eight years.
Following its last original episodes on TBS, reruns of “American Dad!” will continue to air on TBS and fellow Warner Bros. Discovery networks Adult Swim and TruTV until at least 2030. The show’s creators, Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker, and Matt Weitzman, are set to return as co-showrunners.
The news comes as Fox looks to revitalize its “Animation Domination” block on Sunday nights, where the show will join fellow animated stalwarts like “Family Guy,” “The Simpsons,” and “Bob’s Burgers.” The revival marks the second MacFarlane series to return to Fox, following “Family Guy”‘s successful return after being cancelled.
“American Dad!” follows the misadventures of CIA agent Stan Smith and his unconventional family in Langley Falls, VA. The show features a cast including Wendy Schaal as Francine, Rachael MacFarlane as Hayley, Scott Grimes as Steve, and Dee Bradley Baker as Klaus, an attention-starved goldfish with the brain of a German Olympic skier.
