Citizens of Meridian, Mississippi, celebrated in the streets on Sunday evening as Jamal Roberts, a local physical education teacher, was announced the winner of season 23 of American Idol. The finale aired live on ABC, with John Foster and Breanna Nix being crowned runner-up and third place respectively.
Roberts, who is also a teacher at Crestwood Elementary School, performed three original songs during the finale: “First Time” by Teeks, “Just My Imagination” by the Temptations, and his own single “Heal.” His music style is inspired by soul and gospel.
The season saw a record-breaking finale vote, with Roberts becoming the second Black man to win American Idol since Ruben Studdard in 2003.
Several Mississippi officials congratulated Roberts on his victory, including U.S. House Rep. Bennie Thompson and Gov. Tate Reeves. “You’ve made us proud with your voice, heart, and grace,” Thompson wrote.
Roberts has been singing since the age of 2 and has been a part of his church community throughout his life. He participated in choir and played the drums before auditioning for American Idol three times before winning this year.
