Alec Luhn, a 38-year-old climate journalist from Wisconsin, has gone missing while hiking in Norway’s Folgefonna National Park. His wife Veronika Silchenko reported him missing on Monday after he failed to board his flight home and did not respond to her texts.
Silchenko said she last spoke to Luhn on Thursday as he set off on his solo hike. She thought the weather was fine, but phone signals can be patchy in the wilderness. However, by Sunday, she became worried and decided to wait until Monday before taking action.
The Norwegian Red Cross expanded its search operation on Tuesday, involving 30 volunteers and search and rescue dogs. The heavy rainfall made navigation difficult, but drones were used when weather permitted. An alpine rescue group is also assisting the search.
Luhn, who worked for National Geographic, The Guardian, and other outlets, has a strong background in environmental journalism and is based in London. His wife described him as kind, adventurous, and strong, but expressed concern for his safety, saying “I miss him a lot.”
