A Chilean judge has agreed to suspend proceedings against 19-year-old pilot Ethan Guo, who became stranded on a remote Antarctic island after landing without permission. Guo, an American social media influencer, was attempting to fly solo around the world, raising funds for cancer research.
Prosecutors accused Guo of providing false information about his landing point and violating Chile’s territorial claim over Antarctica. However, Guo’s lawyers negotiated an agreement with prosecutors that requires him to donate $30,000 to a children’s cancer foundation within 30 days and leave the country.
Guo must also pay for “aircraft security and personal maintenance” and will be prohibited from reentering Chilean territory for three years. His plane, registered as N182WT, is still in Antarctic territory. Guo experienced complications while flying, according to his lawyer, who claims he was conducting an exploratory flight.
