Americans’ Patriotism Plummets in Last Decade

A new survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research has found that Americans’ pride in US history and democracy has declined significantly over the past decade. According to the poll, only 53% of U.S. adults are “extremely” or “very” proud to be an American, with this number being its lowest since 2001.

The decline in patriotism is largely driven by Democrats, who have become increasingly disenchanted with the country since Donald Trump’s first term. However, many Americans still view being an American as highly important to their personal identity, even if they are critical of the country’s past or current actions.

Republicans tend to be more proud of their country and its institutions, with 9 in 10 saying that the military makes them “extremely” or “very” proud. However, younger people are less likely than older generations to say being an American is highly important to their personal identity.

The poll also found that for many Americans, particularly those from minority groups, their racial or ethnic identity is more significant to their self-perception than their national identity. This suggests that patriotism in the US may be becoming increasingly tied to specific identities rather than a broader sense of national pride.
