A couple from North Carolina has joined a group of millions of tourists who donated to the restoration efforts of the historic Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris. Nick and Suzie Trivisonno, both 77 and 72 years old respectively, contributed an estimated $10,000 to the cause.
The Trivisonnos, who are retired and have deep ties to France, were inspired to donate after witnessing the devastating fire that damaged the cathedral four years ago. They watched in horror as Notre-Dame was engulfed in flames on April 15, 2019.
Their contribution is part of a centuries-old tradition of American support for French culture and faith. The Trivisonnos’ altruism stems from their love for France, which has been a source of fascination for them since they first visited the country as tourists. They have become fluent in French and are members of an exclusive organization dedicated to Burgundy wine enthusiasts.
Their donation comes as the cathedral prepares to reopen after four years of restoration. The event is expected to be attended by dignitaries, but the Trivisonnos expressed concern that it may take on a more political tone due to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s planned attendance.
