Amsterdam Court Sentences Five Men in Football Match Violence Incident

A Dutch court has sentenced five men to prison for their roles in violence that erupted during a UEFA Europa League football match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv in November. The incident, which drew international condemnation, left 25 people injured and sparked accusations of antisemitic attacks.

The five defendants were found guilty of public violence, theft, and assault. One man received a six-month sentence, while another two received one-month jail terms. A fifth defendant was given 100 hours of community service.

Prosecutors said the violence was sparked by strong pro-Palestinian sentiments and anger towards Israeli fans. The incident damaged Amsterdam’s reputation as a tolerant city, prompting the Israeli Prime Minister to offer to evacuate Maccabi supporters.

The game itself took place despite authorities finding no concrete threat to Israeli fans. However, a pro-Palestinian demonstration outside the Johan Cruyff Arena was banned due to safety concerns. Police are still investigating the incident and have identified several suspects who will face trial separately.
