Amtrak Schedules Reduced Service Due to Downed Wires

Amtrak suspended train service between New York and Philadelphia on Sunday morning due to downed overhead wires blocking the tracks. The delays and cancellations occurred just days before a busy holiday period, including Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.

The Northeast Corridor, which spans from Boston to Washington, D.C., was affected by the disruption. Amtrak initially suspended service at 7 a.m. ET with an estimated resumption time of noon. However, by 1:30 p.m., two tracks had been restored, allowing trains to run at reduced speeds and minimizing delays to around an hour.

At least three trains were canceled, but Amtrak has waived additional charges for customers who need to change their reservations. Most customers were accommodated on other trains, according to a spokesperson.

The downed wires also impacted some NJ Transit trains. The region is experiencing freezing temperatures, with the National Weather Service reporting they are the coldest in two years for this time of year.
