Amtrak Unveils Fastest Train Yet on Northeast Corridor

Amtrak is introducing its fastest train yet to the Northeast Corridor, starting with the debut of the NextGen Acela fleet on August 28. The new trains boast a top speed of 160mph, 10mph faster than the current Acela fleet. This upgrade marks the beginning of a full high-speed refresh for Amtrak’s services.

A total of 28 brand-new trainsets will be rolled out over the next two years, offering 27% more seats per departure and an expanded schedule for commuters and weekend travelers alike. The new trains feature sleek designs, upgraded interiors, and modern amenities such as free high-speed Wi-Fi, individual power outlets, and reading lights.

Booking is easy, with options available on the Amtrak app, website, and station kiosks. Passengers can differentiate between the old and new trains by checking which version they’re boarding. The NextGen Acela was assembled in Hornell, New York, using parts from over 180 suppliers across 29 states.

This upgrade is part of Amtrak’s broader modernization push, which includes new train models for the Cascades, Northeast Regional, and East Coast routes, as well as more efficient locomotives. The NextGen Acela aims to make train travel a more pleasant choice, competing with flying in terms of speed and comfort.

Passengers can catch the inaugural train on August 28 from Penn Station.
