Amy Sherald’s Vibrant Portraits Reclaim Black America’s Story

Renowned painter Amy Sherald is set to unveil her first New York museum solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. “American Sublime” features nearly 50 paintings, including powerful portraits of Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor, which showcase the artist’s unique style and lyrical compositions.

Sherald’s work draws inspiration from the American Realist tradition, focusing on the faces of those often overlooked in art history. Her opulent portraits capture individuality and radiance, emphasizing the beauty and depth of Black life in America.

The exhibition highlights Sherald’s ongoing exploration of what it means to be a Black American, rendering a vibrant and unconstrained world in her signature Technicolor style. The artist aims to remind viewers of their shared humanity and emphasize the importance of being seen.

“American Sublime is a salve,” Sherald said, describing the exhibition as a call to remember our shared humanity. Alongside the gallery presentation, “Four Ways of Being” is displayed on the facade of the Horatio Street building, further emphasizing the artist’s message.

The exhibition will be open at the Whitney Museum of American Art, located at 99 Gansevoort St, New York, NY 10014. For more information and to plan your visit, please visit the museum’s website.
