Anaheim Ducks Part Ways with Coach Greg Cronin After One Season

The Anaheim Ducks have announced that they will not retain their head coach, Greg Cronin, for the upcoming season. The decision comes after two seasons under Cronin’s leadership, which saw the team improve to a 35-37-10 record but still miss the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year.

Cronin, who was hired in June 2023, had signed a contract extension through the 2025-26 season. However, general manager Pat Verbeek stated that he made the decision after careful evaluation, citing a need for a change in direction and a new voice to continue the team’s progress towards becoming a Stanley Cup contender.

The Ducks’ defense was a highlight of Cronin’s tenure, with goalies Lukas Dostal and John Gibson combining for a .901 team save percentage. However, the offense struggled under Cronin’s leadership, finishing 30th overall in both seasons he coached.

Cronin’s decision to limit playing time for young players like Leo Carlsson, Mason McTavish, and Cutter Gauthier was also widely criticized by fans. The team’s top forwards averaged more ice time than the younger players, which further contributed to the offense’s struggles.

Verbeek praised Cronin’s dedication to the team but acknowledged that the decision to bring in a new coach was necessary to move forward. With this change, Verbeek looks to continue the Ducks’ progress towards becoming a competitive Stanley Cup contender.
