Anbernic has been working on a new handheld device, but it’s not a nostalgic revival like their RG Vita or RG DS consoles. Instead, this device features an unusual square touchscreen display that runs Android and uses touch sensitivity to reveal ABXY/D-pad buttons. The device appears to be designed with a flip design similar to the Nokia 7705 Twist and Motorola Flipout from years past.
The video showcases the device’s design, revealing the Anbernic logo on both the bottom and back of the device, as well as an alternative shell or case that can be used with it. The device’s unique design might appeal to some fans of retro-style handhelds, but others have expressed skepticism about its usefulness, calling it a gimmick.
It’s worth noting that similar devices have been shown in concept form, such as the “iFrog RS1” from Yanko Design. As an original design manufacturer (ODM), Anbernic has taken this concept and attempted to build it themselves. With no official release date announced, we’ll be keeping a close eye on this device to see if it lives up to its promise of innovation in the handheld market.
