Ancient City of the Dead Uncovered in Italian Alps

Archaeologists have made a groundbreaking discovery in the city of Trento, Italy, uncovering an ancient “city of the dead” dating back nearly 3,000 years. The site, which consists of a monumental necropolis from the Iron Age, was found to be perfectly preserved thanks to flooding in the area.

Located near the Adige River and Italian Alps, the necropolis was developed between the 9th and 6th centuries B.C. It features multiple funerary steels, stone slabs used as monuments, and numerous artifacts such as metal objects, amber and glass paste insertions, and cremation soil.

The discovery includes various remains of personal grave goods, including burnt remains, wooden caskets, and pins or brooches used to close them. The site’s contents provide valuable insights into the social group that inhabited the area during the early Iron Age, shedding light on their identity, roles, and functions.

According to officials, the discovery will allow archaeologists to rewrite the history of the city and pose complex questions regarding self-representation in ancient funerary contexts.
