Ancient Greek Salon Meets in Modern-Day Texas

A group of 14 seniors gathered at a makeshift roundtable in Fort Worth’s Rise and Shine cafe for an intellectually stimulating discussion on the evolution of language, culture, and society. The Socrates Cafe, inspired by ancient Greek salons, meets every first and third Saturday to explore thought-provoking topics. Attendees, mostly above 65, take turns discussing a randomly chosen question without interrupting or arguing.

The group’s moderator, Len Wheeler, aims to diversify the discussions by inviting young attendees, blue-collar workers, and people of color. Despite a lack of diversity in current groups, Wheeler is determined to bring about change. Discussion topics are decided on the morning of each meeting, and attendees must express only their immediate thoughts without researching beforehand.

The group’s format ensures respectful conversations, with disagreement welcome but debates prohibited. The only requirement for participation is an open, civil mind – a skill essential for navigating complex discussions like language and culture. With over 16 months under Wheeler’s leadership, the Fort Worth chapter has become a hub for intellectual exploration in the community.
