Scientists have confirmed the existence of a new, 25 million-year-old whale species that resembles a cartoon character. The Janjucetus dullardi, named after amateur fossil hunter Ross Dullard who discovered the skull on a local beach, would have been a formidable predator with a powerful bite.
Described as having bulging eyes and potentially tiny legs protruding from its body, the creature’s appearance is still shrouded in mystery. However, researchers believe it would have been part of a rare group of ancient whales that gave rise to modern humpbacks and minke whales.
The discovery has taken six years to confirm, but the excitement on both sides is palpable. Dullard, who was initially thrilled to find the fossil, was overjoyed when he finally received confirmation from scientists. “That’s taken my concentration for six years,” he said.
