Andor Creator Blasts MCU for Focusing on MacGuffins

Andor creator Tony Gilroy has expressed his frustration with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, stating that they often fail due to their overemphasis on retrieving a central plot device. Gilroy, who is currently riding high after his work on the Star Wars film Andor, shared his grievances during an interview with Slash Film.

Gilroy’s main criticism revolves around the use of MacGuffins, or central plot devices that drive the story forward without providing much depth or meaning. He used the example of the Tesseract from The Avengers (2012) to illustrate this point, stating that many MCU films rely too heavily on retrieving this object to advance the plot.

Gilroy also emphasized that he is not a fan of fan service for its own sake, citing an example where a potential cameo in Andor would have been “lame” and disrespected the Rogue One film. He prefers to honor the original stories while avoiding unnecessary additions.

The MCU’s upcoming release, Avengers: Doomsday, has also been delayed until December 2026, leaving fans eager for more information about the film.
