Google has officially launched its latest Android version, Android 16, to most supported Pixel phones, months ahead of the traditional August to September release window. The update brings a slew of new features designed to enhance productivity and user experience.
Key highlights include Live Updates for tracking deliveries and rideshare cars, streamlined notifications, and the ability to use desktop-style windows on mobile devices when connected to a monitor. Additionally, Android 16 introduces native controls for hearing aids and new security features, including One-tap Advanced Protection that blocks dodgy websites, scam calls, and USB attacks.
Tablet owners will also benefit from a desktop windowing mode built in partnership with Samsung, allowing them to float, snap, or resize multiple app windows on their device. Furthermore, Android 16 includes new features such as Custom group chats, Smarter Google Photos editor, Room-specific Google Home shortcuts, and Faster transit taps on Wear OS.
Users can download and install Android 16 by going to Settings > System > Software update > Check for update on their Pixel phone. A stable build is being rolled out first, with support for third-party phones expected later this year. The update requires a Wi-Fi connection, a fully charged battery, and backing up critical data before installation.
Note: Non-Android 16 new features are available via Play Services and app updates, requiring no upgrade.
