Google has confirmed that its latest version of Android, codenamed Android 16, will be released earlier than usual. According to the company’s President of the Android Ecosystem, Sameer Samat, the software is on track to hit its June release date. This marks a change in strategy for Google, which has traditionally released new Android versions in August or later.
The reason for the early release is due to the introduction of Trunk Stable development, a more consistent and regular approach to releasing Android changes. The company aims to highlight what’s included in each release and provide users with more frequent updates. Samat stated that this year will see an increased focus on showcasing the depth of Android releases.
Android 16 Beta 2.1 is currently available on Pixel phones, and a final software release is expected at Google I/O 2025. The update is expected to roll out by the end of June, according to current plans.
