Google has released Android 16, its latest mobile operating system update. The new OS brings useful battery, accessibility, and notifications enhancements, but doesn’t radically change the day-to-day experience of using your phone.
Battery Health feature is available on Pixel 8a and newer phones, allowing you to check on your device’s battery health and receive suggestions for extending its longevity. Android 16 also includes live updates from partnered ridesharing and food delivery apps, making it easier to stay informed without constantly checking the app.
Pixel VIPs, a new Contacts app widget, provides details about closest friends and family, but lacks game-changing features. Two enhancements for hearing aid wearers control volume settings and offer additional options for users with hearing impairments.
Material 3 Expressive won’t be available until September, when Android 16’s QPR1 update rolls out, promising a more fluid feel and customization options. Other notable updates include Trade-in Mode, which speeds up the process of getting a new phone, and Advanced Protection, a security feature that safeguards users from online attacks.
Some highly anticipated features, like custom keyboard shortcuts and taskbar overflow, won’t be available until later this year. Android 16’s QPR1 update will bring these features, including adaptive refresh rate, predictive back, and desktop windowing, which allow for smoother navigation experiences and improved battery life.
