Google has announced Android XR, a new operating system designed for extended reality (XR) devices like headsets and glasses. Created in collaboration with Samsung, Android XR combines advancements in AI, AR, and VR to bring a more natural and conversational computing experience.
The first device, Project Moohan, will be available next year on headsets that transform how users watch, work, and explore. These headsets will seamlessly blend virtual and real-world experiences, allowing users to switch between immersive environments and stay present in the real world.
Android XR comes with Gemini, a new AI assistant that understands user intent, helping with tasks like planning, research, and task management. The system also reimagines popular Google apps for headsets, including YouTube, Google TV, Google Photos, and Chrome.
In addition to headsets, Android XR will support glasses for all-day help, providing users with helpful information at their fingertips or in their ear. This includes directions, translations, and message summaries without needing to reach for a phone.
Google is building an open, unified platform for XR devices, offering more device choices and access to familiar Android tools and frameworks. Developers can start building apps and games using ARCore, Unity, and OpenXR from the beginning.
The Android XR ecosystem will be shaped by user feedback and community involvement. Google invites developers, device makers, and creators to join them in shaping this next evolution of computing.
