Animal Shelter Remains Closed After Methamphetamine Smoke Contamination

The Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter in Billings remains closed due to methamphetamine smoke contamination 48 hours after an FBI incineration incident went awry, sending 14 employees to the hospital and forcing the evacuation of dozens of animals. The shelter’s building is contaminated, and its full scope of damage is unknown.

Newman Restoration has been hired to assess and clean the facility, which requires specialized equipment and procedures to remove toxic residues from porous materials such as drywall and insulation. The company expects lab results by next week and estimates restoration could take 10-30 days.

The shelter’s leadership is prioritizing employee and animal safety while exploring temporary solutions to continue serving homeless animals. Community support and local clinics are helping fill the gap until the shelter can reopen.
