Anthropic, an AI startup backed by major tech companies including Amazon, has formed a new team to recruit AWS customers to use its AI products. The team aims to accelerate the adoption of Anthropic’s AI among AWS accounts and drive joint success between the two companies.
Amazon is a key backer of Anthropic, having committed $8 billion in capital to the startup. In return, Amazon receives strategic partnership opportunities and access to exclusive AI models optimized for its infrastructure. This collaboration has led to significant growth in Anthropic’s revenue, with the company projecting $12 billion by 2027.
However, Amazon’s dealings with Anthropic have attracted regulatory scrutiny. The FTC and UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) have investigated the partnership, citing concerns over competition and potential lock-in of sensitive information. Despite these concerns, both regulators have concluded that their current merger rules do not apply to this deal due to its size and scope.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has stated that his company’s models are being used by tens of thousands of Bedrock customers, a platform developed by AWS. This partnership has also led to collaborations with other Amazon partners, including Accenture and Palantir. The collaboration is seen as crucial for Anthropic’s growth and Amazon’s AI business expansion.
