Anthropic’s Claude Chatbot Gains Web Search Capability

Anthropic has released an upgrade to its chatbot, Claude, that allows for web search capabilities. The feature is now available to US-based Claude Pro subscribers as a “feature preview.” To access it, users need to toggle web search on in their profile. Anthropic’s product lead, Scott White, plans to expand the feature to free users and more countries in the coming weeks.

The new web search integration enables Claude to pull current data from across the internet, making it more useful for tasks that require up-to-date information. The system also adds citations to sources so users can verify where the information comes from. In a demo video, an example query about building a web app triggers the model’s “search the web” feature, which highlights sources alongside the answer.

This upgrade has been in development for a while and was previously available as a prototype on ChatGPT last July. Some users had created their own workarounds to give Claude internet access due to its knowledge cutoffs. Now, with this update, Claude can compete with other chatbots that already have web search capabilities, allowing users to access the most up-to-date information.
