A childcare center in Sydney’s east suffered extensive damage after being targeted with antisemitic graffiti early on Tuesday morning. The attack, which occurred around 1 a.m., is the latest in a series of incidents targeting the Jewish community in Australia.
Located near a Jewish school and synagogue, the childcare center was severely damaged but fortunately no injuries were reported. This incident marks the second antisemitic attack on property in four days in Sydney.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has vowed to catch the perpetrators and increase police resources to investigate hate crimes amid growing public frustration over the lack of arrests following previous incidents.
Australia has seen a rise in antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents since Israel’s retaliation against Hamas’ attack on Gaza, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths. The Australian federal police has launched a task force to investigate threats and violence against the Jewish community.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the latest attack as “vicious crime” and is facing criticism from the opposition for not doing enough to prevent hate crimes against Jews.
