A man set fire to a synagogue’s door in East Melbourne on Friday night, while a group of protesters stormed an Israeli restaurant nearby. The incidents are part of a wave of antisemitic attacks in Australian cities.
The attack occurred at 8pm local time when about 20 people were having Shabbat dinner at the synagogue. No one was injured and firefighters extinguished the small blaze. Police identified a perpetrator, but have not released their identity.
About 1 kilometer away, a group of protesters stormed into the Israeli restaurant Miznon on Hardware Lane. They chanted “Death to the IDF” before a 28-year-old was arrested for hindering police. Staff at the restaurant acknowledged the incident and confirmed that security measures would be increased.
Police are investigating three attacks in total, including another early Saturday morning where three cars were set on fire near Greensborough. Suspects spray-painted the cars and walls with anti-Palestine graffiti.
Security investigators are examining the intent behind the attacks. Many in Australia’s Jewish community feel anxious after recent antisemitic incidents, including arson attacks on synagogues and swastikas scrawled on buildings.
Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan and Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece condemned the attacks, describing them as “acts of hate” and “designed to shatter peace.” Israeli officials also condemned the attacks, with President Isaac Herzog urging Australian authorities to take all necessary steps to protect Jewish citizens.
