Apple has admitted to delays in its long-delayed overhaul of the Siri voice assistant, revealing bumps in artificial intelligence development at its latest Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The company’s CEO Tim Cook is struggling to meet investor demands for innovation in AI.
According to Apple software chief Craig Federighi, the work needed more time to reach high quality standards and will be shared in the coming year. Despite this, the presentation was described as “overall a yawner” by Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. The event showcased minor improvements, including a live translation tool and enhancements to the Visual Intelligence app.
Apple plans to open up its large language model, dubbed “Apple Intelligence,” to developers and users, allowing them to use an advanced AI model without an internet connection. However, this move has been met with lukewarm reception from analysts. Industry analyst Paolo Pescatore noted that Apple’s focus is on ensuring major AI products are ready for prime time rather than risk a backlash from its fans.
The company faces stiff competition in the AI space, particularly from Google and OpenAI, which recently acquired Jony Ive’s firm to develop its own hardware product specifically for AI. With Apple shares down over 1% during the keynote presentation, it remains to be seen how the company will address investor demands for innovation and stay ahead of the curve.
