Apple will pay $95 million to settle a class action lawsuit claiming its Siri voice assistant secretly recorded and shared users’ conversations. The settlement, reached with the plaintiffs, could result in payouts of up to $20 per device for iPhone, Apple Watch, and smart speaker owners.
According to court filings, some iPhone users accidentally activated Siri by saying “hey Siri,” which led to their conversations being recorded. The company then allegedly disclosed these recordings to third parties, including advertisers. Two plaintiffs claimed they received targeted ads for products like Air Jordan sneakers after mentioning them in conversation. Another plaintiff said he was targeted with ads for surgical treatment after a private talk with his doctor.
The tech giant denied any wrongdoing and chose not to comment on the settlement. The $95 million payout would be equivalent to about nine hours of profit, given Apple’s net income of nearly $94 billion last fiscal year. A similar lawsuit against Google’s voice assistant is also pending in California.
