Apple Agrees to $95 Million Siri Privacy Settlement

Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a proposed class action lawsuit claiming that its voice-activated Siri assistant violated users’ privacy. The preliminary settlement requires approval by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White and applies to tens of millions of mobile device owners who use Siri.

The complaint alleges that Apple routinely recorded private conversations without user consent, which were then disclosed to third parties like advertisers. Some plaintiffs reported receiving targeted ads after mentioning specific products or health topics in conversation with Siri.

Under the settlement, class members may receive up to $20 per Siri-enabled device, such as iPhones and Apple Watches. The company denied wrongdoing but agreed to pay out the settlement fund, which would be about nine hours’ worth of profit for Apple’s latest fiscal year.

A similar lawsuit against Google is also pending in a California federal court, with the same law firms representing both cases.
