Apple Agrees to Pay $95 Million for Alleged Siri Eavesdropping

Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the company of eavesdropping on iPhone users through its virtual assistant Siri. The proposed settlement resolves allegations that Apple activated Siri to record conversations without users’ consent, even when they didn’t use the “Hey, Siri” trigger phrase.

The lawsuit claims that some recorded conversations were shared with advertisers to sell products to consumers who would be interested in those goods and services. However, Apple denies any wrongdoing and has maintained its commitment to protecting customer privacy.

Under the settlement, eligible iPhone users from 2014 to last year could receive up to $20 per device if they file a claim. Only 3% to 5% of eligible consumers are expected to file claims, and they will be limited to seeking compensation on a maximum of five devices.

The payment represents a small fraction of Apple’s profits since 2014, which total $705 billion. The attorneys who filed the lawsuit may also seek up to $29.6 million in fees from the settlement fund.
