Tech giant Apple has appealed a 500 million euro ($586 million) fine issued by the European Union for violating its Digital Markets Act. The EU announced the fine in April, stating that Apple “breached its anti-steering obligation” with restrictions on the App Store.
The Commission claimed that Apple’s policies prevented app developers from fully benefiting from alternative distribution channels outside the App Store and limited consumers’ access to cheaper offers. Under the DMA, tech giants like Apple are required to allow businesses to inform end-users of offers outside their platform.
Apple recently made changes to its European policies, stating they would be in compliance with the DMA and avoid fines. The company claims that the fine is “unprecedented” and mandates how it runs its store, forcing business terms that confuse developers and harm users. Apple will present the facts of its appeal to the court.
