Apple Brings Lossless Audio to AirPods Max with USB-C Port

Apple has finally brought lossless audio to its high-end AirPods Max headphones, a feature that was long overdue for the device. The update is available on the 2024 version of the AirPods Max, which features a USB-C port and was released last year.

The new feature allows users to enjoy high-quality audio with ultra-low latency, making it ideal for gamers and music lovers alike. To access lossless audio, users need to connect their AirPods Max to an Apple device via Bluetooth and plug the headphones into a power outlet or USB-C port using the included cable.

However, there’s a catch: lossless audio is only available for wired use, meaning users will still need to establish a Bluetooth connection to access other smart features like hands-free Siri. Apple also offers a new $39 USB-C-to-3.5mm cord for those who want to take advantage of the high-resolution audio.

The update addresses one of the biggest criticisms of the AirPods Max at launch: the lack of lossless audio support. The device’s outdated H1 chip and Lightning port made it difficult to achieve this feature, but Apple has managed to overcome these limitations with the new firmware.

Lossless audio does make a difference in music quality, particularly for acoustic genres like bluegrass and folk, as well as mellow styles like jazz. Users can access lossless audio content on Apple Music at no additional cost, which includes CD quality (16 bit at 44.1 kHz) and 24-bit at 48 kHz.

While the update is a significant improvement, it’s still unclear whether it’s enough to justify the AirPods Max’s premium price tag of $549. Even at a lower price point of $449, the device remains a steep investment for those who aren’t die-hard Apple fans or have deep pockets.
