Apple has canceled its augmented reality (AR) glasses project that required a connection to a Mac or iPhone. The news comes after years of speculation about the product’s development, which was initially planned to launch in 2027. According to reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the AR glasses would have featured built-in displays and a transparent optics design with adjustable dimming.
The project faced significant challenges due to power consumption issues, particularly when connected to an iPhone, which couldn’t provide enough processing power. As a result, Apple shifted the focus to powering the glasses via a Mac, but they still performed poorly in reviews with executives. This has led to the cancelation of the project.
However, Gurman notes that employees within Apple’s Vision Products Group now believe there is a lack of direction and focus within the team, which may be affecting morale. The group’s leader, Dan Riccio, retired earlier this year, and the team is now under new leadership.
Despite the cancellation of the Mac-connected AR glasses project, Apple is still working on a refreshed model of Vision Pro, which will feature an upgraded M5 chipset and potentially enter mass production in early 2026. Additionally, the company is reportedly developing a cheaper non-Pro Vision headset with a different chipset, although Gurman claims more details are expected to be announced soon.
